Background:
The U.S. Postal Service continues its proud tradition of honoring the Stars and Stripes with the release of the Four Flags Forever stamps. This striking set features four stamps, each displaying a vivid U.S. flag set against a clean white background. Boldly printed in black type inspired by colonial-era printing, each stamp showcases a single powerful word: Freedom, Liberty, Equality, and Justice—core ideals of the American spirit.
The current U.S. flag design includes 13 stripes representing the original colonies and 50 stars, each symbolizing a state in the Union. In 1818, Congress enacted legislation requiring that a star be added for each new state and that additions take effect on July 4 following a state’s admission. The 50th star was added on July 4, 1960, following Hawai‘i’s statehood on August 21, 1959.
The flag illustration featured on the stamps was created by the late Arnold Holeywell, based on a photograph taken by Howard Paine, who also served as the art director and typographer for the project.
The Four Flags stamps are being issued as Forever stamps, available in self-adhesive booklets of 20 and self-adhesive coils of 100. As Forever stamps, they will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate.
